<image:title>Home - “I was there in the nineteen fifties and sixties when Melbourne, my home town, decided to commit architectural suicide. The wholesale demolition of significant buildings was officially sanctioned. The motive then, was Progress. Today, it's money. Since then the enemy has grown much more cunning than in the old days of Whelan the Wrecker. Today the vandalism is secretly premeditated, it's a fete accompli before we even hear about it....before we can get our act of protest together. But it's still OUR city. Even if our town councils have handed over its future to developers who don't even live here. The Queen Victoria market is an Australian landmark and a spectacular Melbourne shopping rendezvous. It must not be gambled away at a secret game of Mah Johng.”</image:title>

      <image:title>Heritage Significance</image:title>
<image:caption>The Queen Victoria Market is of historical significance as one of the great nineteenth century markets of Victoria and the only one surviving from a group of important central markets built by the corporation of the City of Melbourne. It has been in continual operation as a retail market since the 1870s. The Queen Victoria Market is of historical significance as the site of Melbourne's first official cemetery, which was in use between 1837 and 1854, and intermittently from 1854 until its final closure in 1917. The former cemetery site, which lies beneath the car park and continues under the sheds to D Shed, is of archaeological significance because it contains an estimated 6,500 to 9,000 burials. The site has the potential to yield information about the early population of Melbourne, including Aboriginal and European communities, and their burial practices and customs. The Queen Victoria Market is of architectural significance as a notable example of the class of produce market. It is a remarkably intact collection of purpose built nineteenth and early twentieth century market buildings, which demonstrate the largely utilitarian style adopted for historic market places combined with the later attempt to create a more appealing 'public' street frontage through the construction of rows of nineteenth century terrace shops along Elizabeth Street and Victoria Street. The Queen Victoria Market is of social significance for its ongoing role and continued popularity as a general and fresh meat and vegetable market, shopping and meeting place for Victorians and visitors alike. BURRA CHARTER provides a national guideline to the conservation of our social, cultural and built heritage: ‘The Burra Charter advocates a cautious approach to change: do as much as necessary to care for the place and to make it useable, but otherwise change it as little as possible so that its cultural significance is retained.’</image:caption>

<image:caption>President of Friends of Queen Victoria Market The Queen Victoria Market, where my family were traders from the mid-1940s to the 70s, is in my blood. The Vic Market was my playground and it was where I learned the basics of market retail while I helped my parents during school holidays. I have shopped at QVM most of my adult life, as do my children and grandchildren. I have had several careers, beginning as a teacher of children and then of adults. I set up a retail business in South Yarra in the 80s. I worked as publicity manager first for Multicultural Arts Victoria, and then for the Jewish Museum of Australia, before retiring to go to art school. When, as a Vic Market customer, I became acutely aware of the perilous changes threatening my beloved market, I began my work as a community activist and President of Friends of Queen Victoria Market.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Vice President of Friends of Queen Victoria Market Liz Aird is a former teacher and public servant. She has shopped at the market since the 1970s. In her eyes the Vic Market embodies the spirit of Melbourne. Its multiculturalism, colour and movement plus affordable food epitomise the democratic core of the city. Markets abroad draw her like a magnet. Unfortunately, markets across the world are being transformed from these city hubs serving entire communities into sterile, gentrified soulless husks serving the affluent. Liz wishes to help halt the demise of the Queen Vic Market as it has served Melbourne over many decades.</image:caption>

I have lived across the street from the Queen Victoria Market and been a regular market customer for more than 20 years. <image:caption>Ann Brady, a secondary school teacher, now retired, has been shopping at the Queen Victoria Market since moving to Melbourne from London in 1970. She has always lived within walking distance of the market and is currently as close a neighbour as she could be, with a back lane that opens on Peel Street, opposite F Shed. A fan of open air markets , she was delighted to find such an amazing example of a fresh market in the centre of Melbourne. On her many travels, always on the lookout for good markets, she inevitably concludes that the authenticity and atmosphere of the QVM is unique and to be preserved for future generations at all costs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Famous Friends - “This marvellous public asset appears to have become a bargaining chip in a large property development deal brokered by the City of Melbourne. Our fresh food market is in extreme danger. Under the guise of “renewal” is it about to be stolen with diversity diminished, stallholders sidelined and prices set to skyrocket”</image:title>

<image:title>Famous Friends - “The planning system should shape our city. Community should be able to say what sort of city they want. The problem is the developer. Councils should have less regard for the developer and more for the civic domain. In taking down Vic Market's heritage sheds, all the patina goes, leaving a stripped up new building.“</image:title>

<image:title>Famous Friends - ‘I was there in the nineteen fifties and sixties when Melbourne, my home town, decided to commit architectural suicide.

<image:title>Famous Friends - ‘The Queen Victoria market is an extremely important resource for the people of Melbourne and an undeniable tourist attraction. It is the envy of foodies from other states. There is no bigger contrast between the vibrant, noisy, colourful market, than the alternative environments offered where many fruits and vegetables are displayed under plastic wrap. We have plenty of gourmet dining and entertainment precincts, but very few places dedicated to the display and selling of fresh food where citizens can taste, smell and touch real food, and speak to providers who are knowledgeable and eager to pass on their knowledge. As someone who champions the importance of families being in touch with fresh food and being able to choose from the widest possible range of fresh, seasonal food at reasonable prices, I would hate to see this market disappear. Families visit the market together which in itself is important as a means of influencing how our children view the obtaining of fresh food.’</image:title>

<image:title>Famous Friends - “As a former resident of North Melbourne and a weekly shopper at the Victoria Market for many years, I write to strongly protest against the overdevelopment of this most precious resource. The Victoria Market not only offers the local and wider community the opportunity to shop for the finest food at keen prices but also demonstrates the important social function it achieves. Before moving to the country two years ago I shopped every Friday morning at the Market, developing close relationships with the stall holders. Armed with my wife’s detailed list, I regarded my weekly trips not as a chore but as a welcome social occasion. Chatting with all the stallholders regularly I got to know their way of life, recognized their loyalty to their customers and learned of their great fear that Melbourne will be irretrievably damaged if this grotesque overdevelopment is allowed to go forward. Updating the facilities is important but changing the mood and spirit of the Market would be of great detriment to Melbourne and Victoria. Please do not allow this to go ahead."</image:title>
